The New Pilbara Economic Development Conference 2016, will be at the forefront of some of Australia’s leading political, business and strategic minds when they come together to discuss the investment and economic opportunities that are emerging in the Pilbara region.

The conference is aptly themed “The New Pilbara” and will be held on the 29th November at the Hyatt Regency in Perth.

This conference has been convened by the Pilbara Regional Chambers of Commerce as a way to tell the story of the transformation from mining towns to liveable Pilbara towns and cities.

On behalf of the four chambers John Lally, CEO of the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the one-day conference will attract key community and business stakeholders to engage in a timely discussion about the diversification of the Pilbara’s economic base and highlight the evolving industries that have the potential to drive sustained future economic growth across the Pilbara region.

Mr Lally said, “The Pilbara accounts for 36% of Australia’s exports and boasts a powerhouse combination of location, access to markets, a world-class customer base and unique natural assets that position the region for long-term future growth and prosperity.”

The transformation of the economic powerhouse region was driven by the State Government’s $1.7 billion Pilbara Cities initiative which has delivered more than 100 projects across the region to improve community facilities, town centres, infrastructure capacity and land availability.

The leading regional development agency for the region, the Pilbara Development Commission, is supporting the event as a major sponsor.

Commission Chief Executive Officer Terry Hill said the conference was a timely opportunity to showcase the region’s economic potential.

“The conference program strongly links with the Pilbara Regional Investment Blueprint and supports the Commission’s aim to position the Pilbara in the best possible way to seize opportunities for growth and diversification”, Mr Hill said.

“The iron ore and petroleum sectors will undoubtedly remain the backbone of the region’s economy as the largest provider of local employment and investment. However, there are opportunities for the Pilbara to become a global leader in mining innovation and technology, while demand for new minerals, such as lithium, are also bringing diversity to the region’s rich minerals and energy portfolio.”

“These economic opportunities, as well as the revitalised communities and affordable living, are the characteristics that are shaping the new Pilbara as a place people are choosing to live, work or start a business.”

The conference is proving to have wide spread support with Local Government Partner, The City of Karratha the first to sign on board in a strong sign of civic leadership. Woodside, the Pilbara Regional Council, Horizon Power and Pilbara Meta Maya Regional Aboriginal Corporation are also confirmed partners of the event.

The New Pilbara Economic Development Conference will excite lively discussion and debate about what will be the next step in the region’s journey towards achieving sustained economic growth and positioning the Pilbara to capitalise on the emerging industries such as tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy.

The four chambers have highlighted that this event is a vital communication platform for some of Western Australia’s leading decision makers to present their visions, challenges and success stories to professionals who have an important role in the advancement of the Pilbara region.

John Lally commented, “We are located in the epicenter of a world-class resource province and this is our opportunity to educate, inform and influence the very people who have a big impact on our future success.”

“The post construction phase in the Pilbara has posed attractive business opportunities, particularly working in operational maintenance and plant upgrades within the resources industry. With residential fluctuations normalising, operational costs for businesses are substantially improving and adding to the Pilbara’s bring economic future.”

Several high profile guest speakers have confirmed their attendance and will be featured in the program sessions, including senior government leaders, heads of government agencies, mining executives, industry leaders and key decision makers.

The Hon. Brendon Grylls MLA will lead the order of proceedings and the morning sessions as the Master of Ceremonies. The morning’s panel will highlight local opportunities to capitalise on the region’s growth and development as well as exploring the Pilbara’s Regional Investment Blueprint in the areas of tourism, liveability, business start-ups and natural assets.

The afternoon sessions, led by Master of Ceremonies Kitty Prodonovich, will explore the emerging industries that have the potential to drive sustained economic growth and diversification across the region. The region’s rich minerals and energy portfolio will be showcased, while the afternoon is sure to invite investigation and discussion about agriculture and renewable energy.

There will also be a number of highly valuable networking opportunities throughout the event, giving delegates the opportunity to speak first hand with key stakeholders from emerging and thriving industries operational within the Pilbara.

Registrations are open to attend, arguably the most significant state development forum, of 2016.

My Lally continued, “If you have or are planning to have a vested interest in the advancement of the Pilbara region, this event is not to be missed.”
